We had a Super Bowl party over breakfast. One of the families in our complex had purchased the NFL Game Pass and had access to the Super Bowl. The official game festivities started at 7:30 AM here, so the families that gathered brought their favorite breakfast items to eat while watching the game. Someone said during the game that they were missing nachos, but we ate well.
For those of us who need protein the center of the meal was a delicious egg casserole. It was filled with eggs, cheese, and vegetables and very good. Grandma had made a big batch of apple sauce to go with biscuits that our son cooked. This was obviously a hit as we went home with no applesauce. There were also muffins and fruit. I’ve fallen in love with pomelo. It reminds me of grapefruit, but it is sweeter and less juicy. The most interesting dish to me was an oatmeal bake. I’m sure it is common, but I had never had it before. It was especially good with Grandma’s applesauce as a topping.
It was a little hard to get the streaming started and we had a few false starts, but eventually the game was rolling smoothly along. This was the largest Super Bowl party I’ve ever been attended. There were more than 20 of us split pretty evenly between children and adults. We were also split between 49er and Chiefs fans. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a 49er Super Bowl with people who were fans of the opposing team. Fortunately, everyone was good natured about the competition. These people all have much more important things on their minds than who wins a football game.
The biggest frustration was that with less than six minutes left in the game with the Chiefs starting their comeback the streaming service crashed. Initially we thought it might just be our local connection or something in the Chinese network service, but when our host logged into Twitter it was obvious that this was a global phenomenon. I don’t know how long it took to get the stream reestablished, but it was long enough that one of the teenagers had discovered the final score on his phone. I was really proud of him. He did a great job of keeping the final score secret. That was probably because his team won.
While we waited for the stream to return a discussion of the coronavirus broke out. It has impacted everyone here and in a variety of ways. We are all tired of wearing masks and washing our hands more often than normal. We are all spending more time inside. This doesn’t bother me as much as it does others given how cold it is outside. Grandma and I have limited our movements to the apartment complex and the park. The impact on us is inconvenient, but no where close to what we would label suffering. There are people who are really suffering, and we continue to pray for them. Several of the people in our apartment complex are providing practical support for those who are really struggling. We are still very glad to be here and look forward to whatever comes our way.
